Clovis, California is a small town in Kern County, California located about an hour and a half east of Los Angeles. The town was founded in 1849 by the brothers George and David Clovis. It became part of the City of Los Angeles on December 15, 1913. In 1924, the townsite was annexed by Pasadena. The first European to set foot on what is now Clovis was Juan Rodríguez who came overland from Mexico in 1540. Spanish colonists named the area Rancho San Antonio because there were two springs here that supplied water to Mission San Antonio de Padua and Mission Santa Catalina. The mission was destroyed by Indian fighter José Gabriel García Márquez in 1769 butadera (a meadow or pasture) near where Clovis stands today remains undisturbed as does some of its stone walls dating back to that time. In 1848, George Clovis emigrated from England with his brother David and their families and began ranching land around present-day Clovis Reservoir off Rancho Palos Verdes Boulevard south of Utopia Road. In 1850, they erected a adobe cabin at what is now eastern edge of town; this structure still stands today as part of the Citizens Bank building complex which fronts Harrison Street). On February 14th, 1851, the brothers made another trip downriver to explore potential locations for their new ranch when they discovered what is now Old Town Pasadena being developed along Rice Avenue between First Street and Adams Boulevard; it was decided that grazing land should be acquired northeast of Utopia Road for future cattle operations so permission to build a courthouse/ jail didn’t need apply as early Pasadena had already done so! Brought together by various donations (the largest being $2000 from Nicholas-Jacques Conte), construction started on McClurg House which served as both courthouse and jail until 1863 when Judge James Purdy built the current county seat atnutria (now downtown LA)]. On January 23rd, 1861 while still under construction Purdy ordered newlyweds John Sutter & Mary Sutter move into court house due constructed deficiencies including lack of flooring throughout courtroom preventing proper seating for all parties involved; unfortunately due to hot weather within weeks most interior work stopped before completion & court continued sittin outdoors!
