Clovis is a town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 5,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside–San Bernardino Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first gun barrels were made in Clovis by George Ebenezer Smith in 1851. Smith started making guns from cast iron and other materials his family had on hand. His company produced rifles and shotguns until 1865 when he sold his business to James Wacoal. Wacoal continued manufacturing guns for several more years before folding in 1879. The business assets were purchased by Ebeneezer Goodrich who continued to produce firearms until 1885 when he also folded his business. Goodrich's son-in-law John Weems bought the business in 1886 and continue producing firearms until it closed its doors in 1912. In 1912, Clovis also became home to the world's first machine gun factory located there including one that manufactured artillery munitions (the Clovis Machine Gun). The closure of the machinegun factory did not coincide with any major changes taking place within the community such as a change of name or an increase in population although this may have been due to their proximity to other businesses which saw increased activity during that time period without corresponding growth within Clovis itself

The early inhabitants were probably their predecessors the Pomo people who lived here for thousands of years before moving away in search of new land and opportunities. In 1868, entrepreneur James Wolkiewicz founded what would become Wolkiewicz Bank in Clovis after opening a branch in nearby Atwater Township. The bank became one of the most successful banks in California during its early years with branches throughout California and Nevada. In 1916, it merged with AlcoaCompany's American Banking Company to form Citizens National Bank which continued to grow until it merged with First National Bankshares Corporation in 1978 to form Citibank NA . During World War II, Clovis played an important role as a munitions manufacturing town due to its location near Scranton Arsenal Ammunition Plant and other military production facilities. After the war, much of what remained from these factories was destroyed by fire or demolition but some pieces remain today such as the old Scranton Arsenal Airpark which overlooks Clovis from I-5 just north of town. Today, Clovis remains a thriving community full of agriculture, ranching, post-secondary education and business services; with many residents still active in local businesses and organizations including: churches/synagogues/temples/parks/associations etc.; making it one of the more vibrant communities within Fresno County!
