Clovis, California is a small city in Kern County, California. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Clovis is located adjacent to Bakersfield on the eastern edge of Kern County and south of Stockton on the western edge of San Joaquin Valley. The region that includes Clovis and much of Kern County was first populated by Native Americans about 12,000 years ago. European settlers arrived in large numbers during the late 1800s, when gold were discovered in what is now Kern and Fresno counties. By 1880, more than 100 families had moved to Clovis from all over California. Some of these early settlers built their homes near present-day downtown Clovis while others established ranching operations along the banks of Clear Creek or east of town on Humboldt River. The city began as a farming community but soon became an important regional center for lumber and other agricultural products. In 1916, the City Council awarded a land grant to Edwin Ladd for development into an urban area which would become known as Claremont Park. Widespread growth brought new challenges though; rampant streetcars destroyed large areas of rural countryside while leading to improved transportation options for larger towns like Stockton and Bakersfield; water shortages caused extensive construction projects around town; and inadequate sewers led to high rates for property taxes). The first building built inClOVIS was a schoolhouse which served as a community center for many years! In 1936, a post office was established here; it continued to serve until 1959? In 1957, an Agricultural Laboratory was established at ClOVIS; it continues to be used today as part of nearby UC Davis' Department of Agriculture?! In 1965, an auto shop/garage/shop Annex was constructed at CLOVIS; it continues to be used today as part of nearby Sutter Health?!
