Clovis is a small, unincorporated community located in El Dorado County, California. The population was 1 at the 2010 census. It is situated on State Route 99 about 12 miles east of the larger city of Sacramento. The first white people to visit what is now Clovis were Frenchmen who traveled through the area in 1849. They called it "Coupee de Christophe" and named their town after the French explorer and missionary, Claude-Jacques Conte. The first permanent settler in Clovis was John Sutter, who arrived in 1851. He built a cabin on an eminence overlooking the present day village and named it Sutterville after himself and his brother-in-law, George Atherton. Sutterville remained a summer residence for many years but eventually became too isolated and abandoned due to its location at elevations above sea level. In 1864, George Hetch Hetchy discovered gold near Clovis so he decided to make an attempt to settle there permanently. He founded what would become known as Hetch Hetchy National Park which includes much of today'sClovis Village site along with other settlements such as Oakdale and Adobe Hills within its boundaries today

Clovis was founded by Californios in 1848 as an agricultural center and became known for its white-tailed deer, elk, and bear hunting. The first post office opened in 1851. The town incorporated in 1875 and gained city status in 1907. In 1915 it passed a resolution to become an agricultural cooperative district with other rural areas surrounding it to preserve their economies. Today Clovis remains a primarily agricultural community with some light industry based on citrus fruit processing and textiles production. The downtown area has been renovated multiple times since its original construction including the creation of a full-time police force and the installation of new streetlights.
Clovis was founded in 1851 as a small settlement on the Kern River. It grew rapidly, becoming an important regional center for agriculture and natural resources. In 1912, Clovis became the capital of California.
