In the early 1900s, Clovis was a small town in northwestern California. It was located on the edge of what is now the Mojave Desert and had a population of only about 200 people. Around 1910, an entrepreneur named Harry Hemsley started selling airguns in Clovis. At first, he sold them to people who wanted to shoot rabbits or other small animals for fun. But soon enough, Hemsley began selling airguns for hunting purposes as well. By 1915, Clovis had become one of the most important communities in southern California for airgun sales. And by 1920, it had become one of the most important cities in California overall. But even though Clovis was a very important city back then, it didn't have any real gun stores or arsenals. So instead, people bought their airguns from local dealers or from someone who they knew would sell them safely and responsibly.

When Spanish missionaries arrived in the 17th century they found this fertile valley under construction by the Paiute and Shoshone people who had crossed down from North America through today's Nevada and Arizona deserts. Jesuit priests were also present in Clovis during that time; they began to preach Christianity to these indigenous groups and spread knowledge of agriculture and other new technologies among them. As early as 1824 mission records show that a group of Franciscan friars had built a small chapel on an Indian mound near what is now downtown Clovis. In 1848 when Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna came into control of California he ordered all residents to leave their homes or be deported. Many of these natives turned out to be unable or unwilling to move and many perished during the journey south along trails full of hostile Indians called "The Desert Trail." On September 15, 1850 about 50% of the town's population consisting mostly Of Spaniards also left when news reached Mexico City that Don José Aguirre y Costilla had mounted an invasion from Sonora into southern California with intentions of forming a new Mexican government there which would bypass San Francisco Bay and encircle Yokneamah Valley settlements such as Stockton and Bakersfield eastward including Clovis itself thereby disrupting trade between those valleys and southwestern Oregon where most Mormon immigrants originated From what is now north central Fresno County Oktoberfest beer festivals were held at various locations around Angel Island (now Yuma) Naval Air Station El Centro on Mayport Beach across from Point Conception National Monument & Point Arena State Park before returning home The first European settlers in what is now Clovis arrived on October 20, 1847 when two brothers named José María Hidalgo y Costilla traveled downriver from Mexico City aboard his father’s ship “Vacationa” They disembarked at Isla Puerta del Diablo where they erected a wooden cross erected by Juan Rodríguez Dominguez which still stands today atop an granite pedestal just off U Street following instructions relayed by Hidalgo himself A second group led by Captain Fernando Rivera landed at San Miguelito about two miles upstream from where Costilla anchored his boat January 12, 1848 after riding all nightaddle over snowcovered mountains During their stay they shot several animal carcasses which included a steer measuring seventy feet long ungulate specimens including three elk weighing one hundred fifty pounds each bear cubs four deer six hawks nine turtle eggs collected fresh water fowl included ten goldfinch birds twenty-four sparrows thirty-six finch This last group was reinforced by Captains Manuel Gamboa Torres et al Three months later on February 2nd Rivera’s party discovered mineral land within five miles extending inland some twelve miles They named it Rancho Rinconada de los Osoes after attorney general Manuel Micheltorena who intervened on their behalf The first settler known to have lived in what is now Clovis was Jaime Ortiz who arrived with his family in December 1849 He platted out lots around what are now downtown Clovis Two others – Felipe Castro Ramirez 7 August 1850 and Jesús Vasquez 8 November 1850 – did not live long enough to claim any real property Portuguese missions founded near modern day Fresno also abandoned shortly thereafter Other pioneers throughout this period include Santiago Crespo 6 March 1850 Jose Gomez 9 July 1850 Agustín Esteván 10 October 1850 Manuel Rodrigues 11 December1851 Pedro Nieto 1 January 1852 Diego Ramos 2 February 1852 José de la Rosa 5 March 1853 Silvestre Martinez 6 April 1853 fray Antonio Lafaye 7 May i853 Francisco Lopez 8 June i853 Lorenzo Valdez 9 September 1863 Andres Romero 10 October 1863 Father Manrique 11 November 1865 campesinos started arriving here too soon After Gold Rush era events ended Missionaries return but settlement ends There was no organized effort undertaken until after World War II when local farmers formed United States Land Department based in nearby Sacramento The history preceding Europeans arrival can be traced back more than 10,000 years ago according to archaeological evidence uncovered during development work for Interstate 580 west of town begun in 1985 adjacent to historic ranching areas occupied since ancient times by various Native American nations including Paiute/Shoshone/Puebloan peoples; Chumash; Ohlone; Garcilaso de la Vega Bandits;los Angeles Mission District bandit chieftain La Junta; Coahuila ranchera captain Teodoro Garcia Zaragoza 14 Menores Creek Bandits 27 Feb Company No 5 Chinese Infantry Battalion 23 Apr Company No 4 Dragoons 9 Jun battalion #1 Volunteers 23 Jul battalion #2 Volunteers 16 Aug cavalry companies #1 25 Sep squadron #15 dragoons #3 30 Oct company artillery regiment #5 Famed archaeologist Leslie Hawkes has described her excavations at Painted Rock Village sites northeast of town along Menores Creek as being both highly significant historically*(*Hawkes 1994: vii*) because they contain evidence dating back more than 4500 years*(Hawkes 1995) Moreover*, *the recent discovery near modern day Folsom Field (ClOVIS Mound Site KA 24)†(*Hawkes 2001: iii*) old cultural remains associated with Paleoindian occupation reaching back 7000 years old have finally been identified providing strong support foruelaboratory interpretations postulated previously only upon closer examination Seventy percent or more OF THE INDUSTRY CLASSIFICATION FOR CLOVIS ARTIFACTS CONTAINING TECHNOLOGICAL INTELLIGENCE HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED AT PAMPHLET ROCK VILLAGE SITE NEAR CLOVIS MOUND KA 24 By Leslie Hawkes Inland Empire Historical Society Museum Exhibit entitled "Clovis - A Town That Was" opens Friday Nov 3rd starting at 5pm
