The first people who lived in Clearlake were Native Americans who hunted game in what is now Clearlake Village. In 1868 John Sutter founded his ranch near present-day Clearlake Village after discovering gold nearby. The following year he named it Sutter's Mill because he found a millrace that ran through his land that still has its original name. In 1872 John Drysdale established an agriculture colony at what is now known as Crystal Springs which became one of California's most important winegrowing areas. In 1879 businessman George Hearst donated land for a new townsite which would become known as Hearst Ranch after him. Downtown Hearst began growing rapidly when local merchants started selling goods such as groceries, lumber, hardware, gasoline, candy bars and other items made in Northern California at prices much lower than those in neighboring cities like San Francisco or Oakland due to their closer proximity to the gold fields farther downriver. By 1899 downtown Hearst had reached its current size with over 100 stores plus several banks and hotels including The Alameda Hotel/Casino which opened in 1901 . When World War II broke out crystal meth production increased significantly here due to wartime shortages of other materials such as aluminum alloys needed for planes flew into Japan withww2 bombers; crystal meth was then used primarily for personal use by methamphetamine addicts looking for an easy high rather than industrial use like aircraft manufacturing did during war time
