The name Clearlake comes from the Spanish word "clara" meaning clear and "Lake" coming from Spanish for a calm body of water. It wasn't until 1887 when it was officially anglicized as Clearlake after J.P. Morgan's son, John Palfrey Clearlake donated land to make it an incorporated town with village status on September 20th, 1887. The first post office opened in 1888 and continued serving until 1959 when it was closed due to lack of customers. The economy of Clearlake has been based largely on agriculture with some light manufacturing including furniture and vehicle parts production since the early 1900s; however, recent years have seen significant redevelopment in the form of high-rise residential buildings and businesses such as Whole Foods Market (WFM) which were built on former agricultural land that used to be home to local dairy farms and other small businesses before they were taken over by Walmart or redeveloped into higher-end housing developments like Live Oak Village or Bayview Park. The current Mayor is Rebecca Kaplan who took office in January 2013 On December 10th 1912 a fire destroyed most of downtown Clearlake burning down about 80 homes along with much business property including many stores that would later reopen under new ownership such as Woolworth's (WMT),rigged lights show pieces being made there during prohibition night which still remains an unsolved mystery today; this event also signaled the beginning of major Downtown redevelopment which continues to this day with multiple incarnations including Live Oak Village now known as Magnolia Point and Moss Landing becoming highly sought after neighborhoods for professional athletes who live near Safeway grocery stores owned by Kroger Co., KFC Landfill now known as Luke’s Garden & Brewery and several restaurants/bars have sprung up around Safeway Warehouse Center recently completed reopening called Seasons Gourmet Marketplace which offers fresh produce, meatloaf ovens etc..

The name comes from the English word "clear" and "lake". The first settlers were farmers who arrived in search of water rights on the San Francisco Peninsula. By 1850, they had established a mill at what is now Clearlake Boulevard and Eastshore Drive. In 1876, Clearlake Mills was renamed Clearlake after Father John Fenton, a Jesuit priest who spent time working among the Native Americans near nearby Lakeside Park. As part of the efforts of then-Mayor George Norris to promote settlement along San Francisco's shorelines, he designated land east of Lake Merritt for a town site that would become Clearlake. The town site was surveyed by James Ennis and plat made on July 26, 1879. Development started immediately with construction of homes and businesses around Town Hall Square. Services such as education and health care were provided by local churches until City Hall was built in 1912 which included a dispensary and library. With so many people living near water resources and easy access to jobs ashore or inland, commercial growth soon followed residential development
Clearlake was founded in 1879 by John Slattery and his wife, Sarah. The town developed around the railroad station and growth of agriculture. Clearlake is now a sleepy small town with a population of about 2,000 people.
