Clearlake is a city located in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 23,865 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Contra Costa County after Richmond. Clearlake was first settled by Europeans in 1849 as part of what would become Alameda County. The name "Clearlake" likely derived from a body of water called the Slough or Clear Creek and its numerous islands which lay between the creek's banks. In 1863, John C. Frémont crossed Clear Creek at Clearlake while on his way to prospect for gold near Sutro Mesa. For many years it was one of the few places where people could purchase mail delivery service without leaving their homes - until post offices were opened all over Northern California in 1865. The first permanent settler in Clearlake Township was George Hutton who built his home on land he purchased from Daniel White about 1848. A year later, Hutton married Lydia Sutter and together they started an apple orchard that yielded some of the earliest apples ever grown in this area (now known as Orchard Heights). By 1860, Hutton had 8 children and decided to move away from his farmstead so he could better manage his business interests and see more developments within town: he established a brush tree factory and constructed two stores- one new on Main Street (then named First Avenue), and another off Firestone Boulevard opposite Folsom Park Drive today (the old site of Chevron station). By 1870, when clear Lake filled up with logs left over from mining operations along the creek bed north of town limits – clearing became necessary to navigate through these logs during transport across Clear Lake - Clearlake had formed its present day boundaries including today's downtown area bounded by Second Street/Avenue A south to the creek mouth thence eastward to Interstate 80 just south of downtown; Third Street/Avenue B west to I-80 then northward past Veterans Memorial Coliseum into Hayward District; Fourth Street east past Kaiser Permanente Hospital southeast into Castro Valley; Fifth Avenue northeasterly terminated at San Leandro Bay beyond Point Reyes National Seashore In 1872 John Cranch patented a system for shipping goods by rail across waterways using cutters towed behind barges equipped with oarsman’s equipment – thus beginning what would become known as Water Transportation Company service between Oakland and Contra Costa Counties By 1880 there were five churches within village limits: threeMethodists, one Episcopal, one Roman Catholic In 1886 Anthony Jardine organized several local farmers' clubs which helped promote agriculture throughout Contra Costa County Carrageenan millinery manufacturer Jardine Bros., Incorporated began production based out of town in 1888 Alameda Manufacturing Company began productionof munitions here circa 1906
