The name may have originated with American politician and journalist Andrew Johnson who wanted to give a public recognition to one of his many friends from this period in San Francisco's history In 1875, John Fenton bought 640 acres (240 hectares) east of present-day Clearlake for $4,000 from Don Carlos Moreno y Dominguez which he used as pasture land for his horse ranch until he sold it in 1876 to Captain Prentice Coxe for $10 per acre ($160 per hectare). Captain Coxe built a small station onsite before turning it into a small town called "Coxeville" in honor of its founder on November 16th, 1876 which was also known as "Market Day". On April 12th 1889 another small community called Northfield was organized at what is now end point Road 521 near there original Station Street intersection when early pioneers Samuel Hays & William Irvine arrived looking for land that would later become Hayward County; both men having come overland through Bodega Bay some 20 miles northeast via Whatcom River valley including today's Apple Creek reservoir - all within 3 days old!
