Clearlake, California is a city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 27,752 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in San Joaquin County by land area and second-largest by population to Bakersfield. Clearlake is the most populous city in Stanislaus County. The first Europeans to visit Clearlake were Spanish traders looking for new goldfields in 1821. The town was founded on April 14, 1868, by John Cranch and James Aitken as part of a Rancho Las Dolores grant from Manuel Antonio Carrillo y Costilla to Francisco Moreno. Clearlake became an incorporated village on May 1, 1870. In 1902 Clear Lake became an independent City when it seceded from Stanislaus County and annexed El Sobrante (not including the El Sobrante Naval Weapons Station). On November 2 that year Mayor Wm Harkins addressed the people of Clearlake asking them to ratify the secession ordinance which they did unanimously. On November 3rd 1903 Mayor Harkins ordered all military men leaving town for their holidays not to return until orders were given otherwise there would be open warfare between militias across county lines with no end in sight! This order has been reprinted many times throughout history and still remains a mystery today as to why exactly Mayor Harkins issued this instruction without prior warning or explanation? A large fire destroyed much of downtown Clearlake on December 4th 1904 during early morning hours after starting accidentally due to a construction job done on Elm Street near Seventh Avenue North

They were followed two years later by German settlers who named their new community Kolyma Settlement after General Pavel Dyckman, one of New York State's leading bankers and political leaders during the late 1800s (Dyckman had given $20,000 to help establish Santa Clara Creek as a southern terminus for stagecoach travel linking Northern California with Southern Mexico). In 1887 Kolyma Settlement became Clearlake City when John A. Dyckman donated land for the city's establishment along Santa Clara Creek – making it one of only two cities founded in San Francisco Bay Area during that time (the other being South Beach).
