Clearlake is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 25,814 at the 2010 census. It was founded by John C. Fremont in 1847 as part of the Gold Rush and named for his estate Clear Lake near Sacramento. Clearlake became an incorporated town in 1902. The city limits were expanded to encompass portions of Orinda and San Leandro counties in 1945. The first permanent settler in Clearlake was Jeptha Wright who arrived on July 11, 1847 from Missouri with his family aboard the brig "Pioneer" and landed on the south side of present-day Clearlake Boulevard adjacent to what is now Menlo Park High School. That same year, John C Fremont established a rancho at Clearlake called Rancho Los Sobres (later renamed Rancho Seco). A post office was opened at Clearlake on December 10, 1851 under the name of Sierra Blanca but no settlement developed there until 1861 when a group of Englishmen led by Captain George Willshire set up a mission station near today's Sunnyside Avenue and Terrace Drive. In 1862 they organized what would become known as the Mission Santa Clara de Asís (Mission Santa Clara de Asis), which functioned as an interim military barracks for local Native Americans until 1867 when white settlers founded Father Hidalgo's Alta Californiana mission on current day Menlo Park Boulevard between Superior Street and Easton Avenue North. This site served as both an administrative center for Mission Santa Clara de Asís (the large campus encompassing much of modern-day downtown) as well as housing for missionaries, their families and army veterans during this time period In 1865 Father Hidalgo sold his land comprising most of today's downtown Yesteryear Road to James Wills Henry who subdivided it into lots measuring one acre each that he divided among himself and others interested in developing it into homes or villages similar to those being built across northern California at this time including Atwater Village west of San Francisco; Happy Valley east of San Francisco; Oak Cliff north of Oakland; Gilroy northwest of Gilroy; Vacaville northeastof Vacaville In 1870 James Wills Henry laid out lot number fourteen one hundred thirty five feet long and seventy five wide along present day Menlo Park Boulevard between Easton Avenue North and Superior Street just south of where First National Bank now stands Henry’s original village failed due to lack of development but more later parcels were added resulting in what is now Downtown Menlo Park . Many notable people lived here during its early years including Don Carlos Mendez who ran citrus plantations downriver from Monterey Bay before coming ashore at Alameda Point where he converted some acres into what are now Grant High School sidings and retail space In 1886 Samuel Morse moved from Rochester, New York to start America Telegraph & Telephone Company with offices located here including chair factories manufacturingTelephone headsets products like these: MorseTelephone headset ear cups Downtown Menlo park experiences rapid growth following incorporation date 1904 with erection/landing/establishment various businesses such as Pabst Brewing Co., Masonic Temple #2 & 3 (1892), Pacific Gas & Electric Co., First National Bank (1902), American Legion Post #1 (1910), Sears Roebuck & Company(1912-1963) etc .. In 1906 telephone exchange began operation with 5 telephones per household !! Businesses include: Lighthouse Salvage Yard 1916-1978 - closed due to fire - reopened 1912 by new owners after being donated by Chas Chandler 1914 Hollywood Casino 1917-1965 - closed due to fire - reopened 1925 by new owners after first being leased from Harrah's Entertainment Incorporated 1922 movie theater - Opened 1923 by then Mayor Ed Lee 1935 Pep Boys Department Store 1936 becoming part Of Dillard’s department store chain 1950sinse thereof becoming Trader Joe’s 1966
1843 - The first post office in Clearlake was established. 1911 - A new building was constructed on the corner of Clearlake and Mission streets, which served as the town hall until it burned down in 1922. 1920 - The first school was opened in Clearlake by Mrs. Sarah Hargrave. 1935 - The population of Clearlake increased to 2,500 when the railroad tracks were extended into the community. 1945-1950 -Clearlake became a part of the newly created San Bernardino County.
