Clearlake was incorporated as a city on November 10, 1966. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The first post office in Clearlake opened on May 5, 1867. Clearlake had a population of only 2 people in 1870 when it was platted as a small town by Lorenzo Snow and George Stephenson. In 1884, clear Lakes name was changed to Clear Lake City after it became apparent that there would be no water available for irrigation in that area so quickly growing cities were needed to support their agricultural populations. The original downtown business district included eight buildings built between 1923 and 1926 by Prentice Mulford who developed the town from scratch following his purchase of all of the land east of Main Street (later renamed Live Oaks Boulevard). A new downtown was planned but never built due to high costs associated with its construction including $2 million for street paving and sidewalks alone! The Mulford Diner still stands today on Live Oaks Boulevard across from the present day police station building which also served as our first firehouse back when this area only had one! In 1969, local businessman Don Briggs donated enough money to change the name of "Clearlake" to "Lake McClure" in honor of his wife's late father-in-law who had done much for Clear Lake during his lifetime; most notably donating over $100,000 towards creating Crystal Springs Reservoir adjacent to our city limits making it possible for us all now enjoy clean water year round without having to go through long drives into Nevada or Arizona just to get it! On October 1st 1965 at 4:00pm local time; "Lake McClure" officially became 'Clearlake' after years of planning and hard work by Mayor Clyde Ferguson and many dedicated citizens! This momentous occasion marked an amazing beginning for our community where we are today - Thank You everyone who participated!!
