In 1821 Christopher Isham built a fort at Clearlake which served as a stop for horses used by military officers on their way from Los Angeles to Yokohama. A post office was established at Clearlake in 1826. A mill was built around 1830 by J.C. King & Brothers which produced flour for local farmers until it burned down in 1847; however, this mill continues to be remembered for building Clear Lake's first water wagon ferry service between Tustin Creek (now Crystal Cove) and Point Mugu Lagoon (now Muir Beach), starting on July 3rd of that year In 1850 Drury Cottage became known as "the most beautiful place in America" when it was featured in an article about American homes published by Life magazine; it still remains one of Clearlake's most popular tourist destinations today Crystal Cove Boardwalk opened up along Tustin Creek on October 1st 1896 On November 21st 1901 President William McKinley gave a speech from his ranch near Northridge about plans for new railroads through southern California On December 1st 1901 Los Angeles annexed what was then part of Riverside County including Clearlake On January 8th 1902 United States Post Office No 771 moved from Anza Viejo into what was then called Rancho San Bernardino de los Pinos just east of present day Mount Wilson Boulevard while another US Post Office relocated from Claremont into what would become Menlo Park just west of present day Willowbrook Boulevard By 1907 there were six US Post Offices located throughout Orange County with two more establishing themselves within clear lake limits: one at West Hills (later Woodbury Heights) eastside off Willowbrook Boulevard while another at Tommy Hill northwest side off Mohawk Road

Clearlake was first settled in 1847 by the Clearlake party of California gold seekers. The town was named after the clear Lake effect seen on photographic prints when light shines through a liquid surface into small fractures or crevices. The pioneers found salt and other minerals in the area, so they developed a sugarcane and cotton industry. In 1865, Clearlake became an incorporated city with a population of just over 50 people. The city's first mayor was Charles H. Wright, who served from 1865 to 1867. The city experienced rapid growth during World War II as it became one of the largest United States military bases in the Pacific theater with over 20,000 personnel stationed there. However, after the war ended, Clearlake declined rapidly due to economic depression and falling population levels. In 1970, Clearlake merged with nearby Fremont to form what is now known as Fremont-Fremont-San José City Unified School District (FSD). Today, Clearlake is home to several major businesses including Macy's Department Stores and Honda Motorsports Park which are both located within walking distance of each other.
