Clayton is a small city in Siskiyou County, California, United States. The population was 7,956 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Siskiyou County. Clayton was founded by Mormons in 1859. It became an incorporated town in 1872 and a city in 1959. The first Europeans to visit Clayton were Antonio Mexia and Juan Bautista de Anza on November 15, 1769, when they explored the area between Siskiyou and Butte counties from Presidio Heights eastward. They named the site San Bernardino de las Animas (Spanish for "Mormon Spring"). Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna discovered gold near present-day Dixon on February 6, 1849, while exploring south of Yreka with his army from Yreka Pass through what is now Nevada County. The discovery opened up new areas for settlement in central California and also increased competition between Mormon settlers and non-mormons for access to land grants and other resources. A party led by George Custer reached Clayton on April 20th wagon train during their famous March of the Mackinaws expedition; they camped there until May 3rd before continuing their journey northeast along the Oregon Trail to Fort Bridger where they met American forces under General John Custer on July 10th. On October 14th 1860 a group of Mormon pioneers including Jenson Purdy set out from Humboldt Bay across Point Reyes National Seashore into what is today Mendocino County for what would be their final attempt at reaching Gold Rush era settlement in Northern California Some members of this pioneer party lost their way over icy mountains section called The Narrows which are located about 8 miles north of Clayton today On arriving at Massacre Rock some men dynamited an opening into a huge stone cave that served as both homecoming center for many pioneer families after years spent traveling long distances sans food or water signifying how desperate these pioneers were even though most arrived with little more than nothing but clothes on their backs After spending winter months exploring these dramatic surroundings many Saints finally arrived at Mill Creek Valley via stagecoach route January 11–15 1861 just west of present day Dixon where they erected first church building using logs taken from local cedar trees . This impressive structure still stands as one of America's earliest Wooden Churches Today In 1862 Brigham Young organized Deseret Grammar School (later Brigham Young University) which soon became one of largest religious schools westofthe Mississippi River
