Clayton, California is a city located in the Kern County area of Southern California. The population was 96,512 at the 2010 census. The city is named after General Andrew Jackson Clayton who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as U.S. Representative from California’s 5th congressional district. In 1881, the Wabash Railroad built a line through Clayton and soon became an important transportation artery for goods destined for Northern California and other parts of the Western United States. A number of industrial plants were built in Clayton during this time including Campo Automotive, which manufactured automotive components until 1978; Isuzu Motors America which produced trucks and SUVs until 2003; Ascot plc., now known as Allianz Life Assurance Company, once had a major presence in Clayton with its headquarters located on Belle Isle before it moved to nearby Bakersfield in 2005.
