Clayton Shooting Range History The first Clayton Shooting Range opened in 1911 and was located on the east side of town. It was closed in 1951 due to a lack of funding. The next year, the Clayton Municipal Rifle Association (CMRA) built a new shooting range on the west side of town. This range became operational in 1957 and served as the primary training ground for clay pigeon shooters until it closed in 1986. In 1995, CMRA leased land on the north side of town from City Council and rebuilt the old San Bruno High School gymnasium into a firing range complex with four fields that can accommodate 10,000 rounds per day. This complex is still used today as the Clayton Shooting Range Complex and offers both indoor and outdoor rifle ranges as well as target practice areas for civilians and law enforcement officers alike.

Clayton, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of eastern California. It has a population of about 17,000 people and was founded in 1851 by Mormon pioneers. The Stockton-Munster Railroad reached Clayton in 1898. Today, the community is home to the Clayton Valley Agricultural Center and many small businesses. Clayton is also the headquarters for Southern Pacific Railway's Western Division. The townsite at which Clayton was founded was on land that had been part of Rancho Nanaco de la Vega, granted to José Altamira y Pacheco by Spanish Governor Manuel Nieto on Sept 10, 1849. The grant included 3 square miles (8 km2) of land east of present-day Needles and south of what is now downtown Los Angeles. In 1850, Mormon pioneers from Utah arrived in wagon trains near Clayton and began to build homes there. In 1851, one group led by Brigham Young moved into what would eventually become the town site on portion of Rancho Nanaco de la Vega grant that lay east of today's Needles Boulevard and south of City Park Drive (now known as Ventura Boulevard). This initial settlement contained only 14 residents: 12 men and 2 women; plus 6 children who lived with their parents until they were old enough to come out own their own land. 1st store: James Wetherald & Sons opened its first store here around 1855 Agrarian Landowners Association meeting held on May 9th organized 60 acre parcel #2 from Samuel Griffiths 4th son lot located just north side Of center line high ground between hills... lots numbered starting with 1 went to citizens Isaac Newton Phelps son John born Dec 15 1861 lots numbered 7 through 11 went to Willard Richards brother Jesse born Apr 25 1860 Lots numbered 12 through 16 went to Wm Draper Store Keeper soon followed by Hosea Stout miller brick built 1865 Agrarian Landowners Association minutes book entry dated June 3rd says "FirstStore open at cornerof Main Street an dHighway" Census records list James Wetherald Jr., wife Jane Norton Wetherald & Children as proprietors.. Other early settlers include Micahel Beasley (1856), George Crandall (1857), Israel Butterfield (1859), Reuben Whitney Sr.(1861), Abram Jones(1862) . . . . Prior to 1870 most settlers were farmers or ranchers connected with fruit orchard/garden operations." One tradition has it that when white men came into town they took all the apples off the trees so the Indians couldn't have them! There are several apple trees still standing in town today! Clayton post office was established on February 17th, 1863 By order from US Postmaster General Gideon Welles." In 1865 local merchant Hiram Lloyd became postmaster after Welles' departure. By 1880 there were six stores in town including two grocery stores operated by pioneer Lorenzo Dowling and his sons Hiram Dowling Jr.(baptized October 5th 1830)& Edward Everett Dowling(baptized December 10th 1840). Two years later another Grocery store operated by Jno Lyden called "Lorenzo's". On December 13th 1881 Lorenzo Dowling died suddenly leaving his business assets govt controlled by daughters Adelia Livermore Lakers(baptized May 20th 1862)-Edith Livermore Dowling(born November 8 1912)+ Evalyn Eaton Livermore(born July 26 1916)+Evelyn Lyon Livermore(March 21 1935)+Hiram Lloyd Post Office closed 1950s
