Clayton, California is a city of over 100,000 people located in Contra Costa County on the eastern side of San Francisco Bay. The population was estimated at 110,869 as of the 2010 census. It is one of Northern California's most populous cities and has been nicknamed "The City by the Bay" for its location on San Francisco's waterfront. The name comes from Rancho El Cajon, which included land that later became Clayton. Clayton had its first settler in 1851 when John Fenton bought 640 acres (2 km²) along the tidal estuary which forms today’s downtown core. In 1865, another early settler, George A Hodge, purchased an additional 640 acres (2 km²). This land became known as “Hodge Ranch” and would become one of Clayton’s most valuable properties until it was sold off in 1916 to millionaire Waddell & Son real estate developer Julius Waddell. Waddell named his development “Linden Hills” after two longtime friends who had contributed $10 toward its purchase – Lewis Linden and Frederick Hirschman – and also donated $100 to the American Red Cross during World War I. With this initial investment in property and infrastructure, Waddell quickly reinvested profits into new businesses such as lumberyards and machine shops that would help nourish Clayton's rapidly growing economy well into the 20th century. In 1916, Julius Waddell sold his development “Linden Hills” to millionaire fireman Eugene Shearson for $1 million dollars . This donation helped spur a resurgence in building construction in Clayton throughout the 1920s and 1930s; shearson would continue making donations to various civic organizations until his death in 1976. Due to this philanthropy and money invested by herason into local businesses over many years both before and after World War II, many credit Shearson with being the driving force behind what is now known as The City bytheBay phenomenon within Northern California. Clayton, California is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 3,691 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Mojave Desert on the extreme southeastern border of Kern County. Clayton was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847 and named for Bishop George Clayton of Utah. The first post office in Clayton opened in 1851. The first store was built on Main Street in 1870; it closed around 1915 because of lack of customers. Clayton's first school was established in 1874 and operated until 1914. A new school was built on Enterprise Avenue near present-day Highway 395 west of town in 1909 and served as the town's only high school until 2003 when it merged with nearby Palmdale to form Palmdale-Monaco High School District No. 2 which has since closed its doors for good. Clayton has been home to many businesses over the years including: two banks (First National Bank and Citizens State Bank), several churches (Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints, Methodist Episcopal Church, United Brethren Church), a military base (US Air Force Base Imperial Valley), a munitions manufacturing plant (Majestic Ammunition Company) and an insurance company (Admiralty Life Insurance). In recent years there have been efforts to revive some aspects of local history such as developing a heritage museum or restoration work on some historical buildings that have long been abandoned or neglected. As one of America's most remote rural towns, much attention has recently been paid to preserving what little remains from this agricultural outpost before it becomes overwhelmed by development pressures brought about by changing demographics within Kern County itself - particularly within the last few decades by subdivisions ensuing along Interstate 5 southward into residential areas now known as West Hills and East Hills outside the boundaries of Claytontown while other commercial areas have sprung up along I-5 between West Hills and East Hills becoming known as "Claytown."

Clayton was founded in 1849 by George Clayton and his wife, Catharine. It was named for General John Fenton, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as an congressman from California. The Clancys were the first white settlement in what is now Fresno County. In 1861, they sold their interest in the town to A. P. Hill, founder of Southern Pacific Railroad
