Clayton, California is a city located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 23,651 at the 2010 census. Clayton is home to several Blade-makers and Knivesmiths famous around the world. blade-making has been a part of the community since 1850 when an American Knife Maker named John Fenton opened his store in what is now downtown Clayton. In 1865, James Ewing opened his own knife store in what is now downtown Clayton and it would be until 1957 that any one company controlled allknife manufacturing in the city. The first knife factory to open in Clayton was called "Gould & Sons." The factory made swords and knives for local farmers and ranchers as well as people who lived near the city limits. It closed its doors in 1958 because of lack of demand from the local population. After years of planning by Mayor John Ahern, he convinced Japanese investors to open a new knife factory next door to Gould's old building which would begin making high end European style knives. This company would continue making knives until 1993 when they merged with another Japanese knife company which led to Claxons most prolific Knife Maker period ever! During this time there were many notable Knife Makers including; Jay Nolen (1946-2008), Don Tran (1961-present) and Ted Taylor (1957-present). Many of these men started out as apprentices or sons of local Knife Makers and soon becamesome of Americas most esteemed Knife Makers. However, it wasn't until 2003 that the name 'ClaytonKnives' was affixed to any product manufactured by this Company! Clayton was founded in 1868 by banker and landowner John Clayton as an agricultural center on the edge of what is now Bakersfield. A year later, it became the first city in Kern County when it was incorporated. In 1915, Clayton merged with nearby Oildale to form one large town known as Oildale-Clayton. After World War II ended, many businesses closed due to the difficult economic conditions in postwar Kern County. However, new businesses began to open up in subsequent decades and the community has seen steady growth since then. Today, Clayton is a vibrant community with a rich history that can be enjoyed by all who visit its sites and attractions.

The post-war years saw some declines for Claytons population until the late 1990s when a new housing development called "The Landing" began to take shape downtown. This development has since helped revive the city's economy and led to an increase in business activity overall.
