Clayton, California is a city located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 as of 2019. Clayton was founded in 1887 by American entrepreneur James A. Clayton and his brother-in-law George W. Godfrey as a small farming town on the outskirts of Los Angeles. It became an important center for industry during the early 20th century due to its location at the junction of two major railroads and its access to water resources. In 1933, Clayton became home to the world's first commercial high capacity water storage tank when it constructed the world's first large open-air concrete storage tank system known as "The Great Western Storage Tank Company." During World War II, Claytons manufacturing capabilities helped contribute to war production efforts by producing munitions and other materials needed for military construction. After World War II, Claytons focus shifted towards agricultural products and other nonmilitary ventures until it reopened its high capacity water storage tank company in 1984 with a new name - The Great Western Tank Company Inc. Today, The Great Western Tank Company Inc.(GWT) manufactures combined sewer/water systems (CSWys), digital process control systems (DPCS), stormwater management systems (SWMS), meter reading devices (mmrDs) and more for both private and public customers throughout North America. The settlement began as a Mormon farmstead in 1853 on land donated by John Sutter. It grew rapidly during the Gold Rush because of the vast new acreage available for farming after gold was discovered in 1848. In 1862, Colonel John Brougham organized what would become the County of Los Angeles out of parts of Santa Clara and Kern counties. Brougham named Clayton after General James Halleck, commanding general of United States forces at Mexican-American War victory at Buena Vista Canyon. During World War II, Clayton served as home to San Fernando Valley Air Base which produced aircraft used in both European and American wars including Operation Overlord andOperation Neptune's Spear; these missions took place near nearby Hollywood Hills which became famous for their "High Line" neighborhood development around then-Hollywood Park Boulevard which still includes an observation deck overlooking that area today
