It is the fifth-largest city in Los Angeles County and the second-largest city in Riverside County after Riverside. Clayton's economy is based on agriculture and services. The first gun swivels were patented on October 10, 1892 by J.P. Morgan and his partner George Eastman of Rochester Hills, Michigan. Clayton is a small, unincorporated town in Kern County, California. It lies on the banks of the Kern River, east of Bakersfield. The population was 3,883 at the 2010 census. The first European settler in Clayton was Nicholas Ramirez in 1853. A post office called Clayton was established in 1854 and remained in operation until 1912. The town name is from Jedediah Clayton, an American pioneer and surveyor who settled the area around Bakersfield in 1827. Clayton has a history that goes back to when it was part of Mexico City County. In 1865, it became part of California because of the Mexican–American War and by 1870 it had a population of 1,000 people. A cotton gin was built there in 1876 and continues to be used today. In 1907, Clayton voted to secede from California and become its own municipality with a population of 514 residents. It incorporation took place on October 16 that year under the name "Clayton (city)". In 1915, after World War I ended, Clayton-Bakersfield merged into Bakersfield as one city government under Mayor John Smedley's administration; however this merger did not last long because local politics preoccupied him with other campaign issues during his final term as mayor before he ran for election as Ulysses S Grant's running mate on November 4th against James Buchanan II (the son of President Abraham Lincoln). A new City Council was elected on December 2nd following Mayor Smedley's resignation effective January 1st due to health reasons; all six members were Democrats except for two Republicans: William Voight and Harry Wermann both served three terms each from 1917-1922 before moving up through career paths within government service). On January 3rd1920 Mayor Wermann recommended impeachment proceedings be brought against then-Councilmember John Houdini over charges including accepting bribes from organized crime figures such as Lucky Luciano; but no action ensued due to lack evidence although Houdini denied any wrongdoing
