The first Europeans to visit Clayton were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his crew on their journey from Mexico City to Point Reyes in Marin County in 1542. They named the bay after one of their ships, the "Clayton" (Avenida de la Propiedad). In 1874, General James K. Polk sent Ulysses S. Grant as part of his strategy for winning the Civil War - Grant's plan called for marching through Central Valley and into Northern California - but when they reached Clayton they found it had been abandoned by its original settlers because of gold Fever. They soon discovered that there was valuable gold property nearby, including an old ranch now known as Gold Rush Hill which is still occupied by people today who live off agriculture and a few small mines that have produced some yellow gold over time. The town's name comes from this early discovery: first it was called "Frisco", then changed to "Clayton" because it was near Frisco in Texas; finally, because it seemed like what Europe needed at that point were more farmers than warriors (the nickname stuck), it became "Clayton". Because so much treasure had been mined here during these years – both Native American artifacts such as pottery shards and cannons dating back centuries as well as Spanish coins – Clifford built many luxurious homes just outside of town until he ran out of money in 1885 due to floods caused byors Surrounding Lands Railroad construction project nearby. Today much remains unchanged about Claytons history including large amounts of natural gas reserves awaiting exploitation

The town was founded by Hockaday and Pearson in 1867 as a small community on the banks of the San Joaquin River. It grew rapidly during the 1870s and 1880s due to its location on land that had been purchased by George Crile from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $1,000. The town became an important transportation hub due to its position at the junction of two rivers and its access to railroad tracks. In 1902, Clayton established itself as an incorporated city with a population of 10,000. In 1915, Clayton was hit by one of history's biggest storms when an estimated 120 mph (193 km/h) winds caused extensive damage across much of central and eastern Kern County including severe flooding which destroyed many homes and left more than 20 people dead or missing. The storm also resulted in more than $30 million in damage ($ million in current dollars). Today, Clayton remains an important center for local commerce and government service with a strong economy based on agriculture, manufacturing, services and tourism
Clayton was founded in 1853 by Ohio settlers, and became a major center for the agricultural industry. The town grew rapidly during the Gold Rush, and in 1872 it incorporated as a city. The city was renamed after General Grant in 1896. Clayton later became a state capital and is now part of Sacramento.
