Clayton, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Odessa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settlers in Clayton came from eastern Pennsylvania in 1847 and arrived on horseback. They set up a brushwood and adobe rancho near what is now the intersection of U.S. Route 95 and Foothill Boulevard. A post office was established at Clayton on October 10, 1851, and the town charter was issued on December 3, 1852. The first store was built on Main Street in 1865 by Triton Wagon Wheel Store proprietor John Henty (1807-1875). In 1867 Chasuble & Co., merchants and wagonmakers founded a flour mill at what is now downtown Clayton with two brick buildings still standing today: one house fronts Main Street and the other houses an engine shop and storage tanks for grain that are also still intact today. In 1898 Antonio Gomez built a sawmill along I-5 just east of present day Clayton to supply his hometown of Bakersfield with lumber needed for new homes being construction elsewhere in Kern County at that time.
