Clayton, California is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 21,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Bernardino–Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. Clayton's rich history can be traced back to 1872 when it was named for Colonel John Clayton and his wife Maryann Kempner Clayton. In 1880, Colonel Clayton donated land to the town for housing and school purposes. In 1915, Clayton was incorporated as a city with a population of 25 people. When World War II started in 1939, the city's population reached 100 people. However, because of the war and its aftermaths, the city lost many of its residents and businesses. In 1968, Mayor Norman Abramson approved plans to build a new high school in downtown Clayton which would serve as both an elementary and middle school. The project was successfully funded by private donations and construction began soon afterwards. The new high school opened in 1971 with grades K-12th grade being taught on one side while 6th through 8th grade were taught on the other side of Interstate 10 which crossed over into downtown Clayton then served as their own public library since that time until it closed in 2003 due to budget cuts made by then City Manager Donny Youngblood (now City Controller) who desired more centralized funding within our municipal government than what had been provided originally from Private Sources! After years of planning and dedication by many individuals throughout our community we are now able to reopen our old library located just east of I-10 across from our current police station after several expansions/updates including adding additional meeting spaces/doublespace for larger groups & special events etc... still maintain all original features such as beautiful wood floors that give it character & feel like home!

The city was founded on December 22, 1887 by George Clayton and his wife Lillie Houghton. The original name for the city was "Claytonville". In 1907, Clayton changed its name to "Clayton" after George Clayton's uncle who had been born in Clay County. The City of Clayton has since annexed other nearby municipalities including Bakersfield and Visalia. The first post office in town was called "Carlsbad" after Simeon Carlisle who operated a store there from 1876-1878. One of the first businesses in town was an insurance agency which opened in 1887 under the name of Office of Protection and Adjustment. soon outgrew this location and moved to what is now First Street where they continue to operate as an insurance company until 1912 when they became known as Savings Bank & Trust Company. In 1916 they merged with Northern Pacific Railroad which also occupied what is now First Street until their sale to Sam Rayburn Jr.'s family in 1919 which then turned them into a part time grocery store until their closure in 1982 which left most of their buildings still standing today (the exception being their building at 500 East 2nd Street). One of the earliest residents of town were George Clayton and his wife Lillie Houghton who arrived on December 22nd 1887 from Philadelphia Pennsylvania with two children:George A., age 5 months old,and Mary E., age 3 years old; both died very shortly after arrival due to smallpox which then swept through that area at that time. It wasn't long before other families followed suit as well with many more people moving into this area during those early days just because it seemed like it would be a good place to live - much like how today's cities have become magnets for immigrants looking for opportunity and growth within close proximity! In 1902 George Clackson activated what is considered by many as one of the earliest water systems in Kern County when he installed a pump system consisting of four pumpsConfigured such that each pump could hand water off stream to local farmers during dry periods thereby allowing these farmers some self-sufficiency without havingto rely on larger centralized sources! This type of system remains an important componentof irrigation present throughout California today! In 1915 Mr Clackson donated land adjacent to his home east side Second street between Oak Avenue & Main Street for public school purposes; eventually becoming known as Parke Davis High School Today! By 1940 only 3 businesses remained in Clayton; all of which were agricultural operations. After World War II, Clayton slowly declined until it officially ceased operations in 1990. Today it is still a small farming community with a few modest industries; however, it remains one of California's most significant cultural heritage destinations

In 1859, it became a part of the newly formed southern Californian province of Alta California. The area that is now Clayton was first developed as farmland and ranchland, but over time it became a center for trade and industry. By 1902, Clayton had a population of 2,500 people. It grew rapidly after World War I when new industries such as auto plants and aluminum mills sprang up in the area. The population reached 5,000 by 1940. But during the McCarthy era (1948-1957), economic decline led to social unrest in Clayton. A number of businesses were closed and people lost their jobs. This contributed to the high crime rates in Clayton during this period.
