Clayton, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population of Clayton was 1,851 as of the 2010 census. It lies at an elevation of 4,629 feet (1,362 m). The area that now comprises Clayton was first inhabited by the Mono people in the late 18th century. A post office called Clayton was established in 1848, and remained in operation until 1914. The community was named for General James Fenton Clayton who fought at Buena Vista and Mexico City during the Mexican-American War. In 1865, Fredrick Sanger settled near what is now downtown Clayton and began to grow cotton on his farmstead which became known as Sanger's Plantation. In 1897 Joshua Wolk built a log cabin on what is now east side of Main Street in downtown Clayton. Wolk operated a grocery store there from 1899 to 1904 before moving it to Tulare County where he founded another grocery store also called Wolk's Depot in 1905. In 1907 John Wesley Powell discovered a well site along Ulysses Road in present day southeast corner of Main Street and Schoolhouse Hill within town limits; this well later yielded gas hydrate which was used to power early oil drilling operations around Blanding Ranch Reservoir north of town. On July 9, 1916 Union Pacific Railroad predecessor Santa Fe Railway constructed a line between Laughlin and Bakersfield townships west of present day downtown Clayton; this line led to the development of nearby Basin Field due south of town along Red Bluff Road northeast of today's high school complex on Red Bluff Road just west off I-5 exit 8A (UCLA/USF) with access from east side streets via ramps leading from I-5 exit 8B (USF)). By 1922 Dry Creek Well #2 had been drilled successfully about 12 miles northwest by US Geological Survey’s Fort Tejon Drilling Unit No 2 under contract with Los Angeles Gas Companyqviiiii; production continued intermittently through 1924 when lease terminated by company because increased prices for natural gas caused depletion; however discovery produced methane gas since 1915viiiv thus making Methodist Church property available for hydraulic fracturing activities starting about 1923 Natural gas prices have typically ranged from $0.30 per million cubic feet up to $3 per million cubic feet over time implying potential recoveries up to 106%. HoweverFracking has not occurred on Methodist Church property because it falls within areas considered seismically unstable due primarily to injection wells associated with Antelope Valley Shale Formation activity some 66 miles away viiw

Clayton, California is located in the Central Valley of California and is bordered by Fresno to the north, Bakersfield to the east, Kern County to the south, and Stockton to the west. The city was founded on July 4, 1853 by Nicholas Clayton and James Hockaday as a town named after their father-in-law, General George C. Marshall. It became an incorporated city on February 14, 1909. The population of Clayton peaked at 103,812 in 1920 and declined to 79,938 by 1930. In recent years however, Clayton has experienced growth due to its location close to several major automakers and its access to Interstate 5 which makes it easy for commuters into Los Angeles. Clayton has a rich history that can be traced back to 1853 when Nicholas Clayton and James Hockaday founded the town of Clayton as a small community near what is now downtown Fresno. The two men were looking for land that could be used for agriculture but they found no success so they decided to move their settlement closer to the cities in order find more success. They landed on a piece of land that would become known as “The Homestead Hill” because it was donated by General George C. Marshall. However, despite this donation from one of America’s most famous leaders, nothing came of this idea because there were not enough people interested in moving there at first. Instead they started trading goods with other towns in search of someone who might wantto live there too so they could get some business opportunities going again instead of just sitting around waiting for someone else’s idea to work out properly again like it had before. In 1858 Nicholas Clayton married Maria Hockaday and started farming his new property even though he had no farm background himself previous thereto! He soon realized that this was not going well so he decided against it and moved his family back downriver where he had some initial success growing maize crops but also started selling livestock such as cows or horses nearbyMiseryville then North Carthage before finally settling down permanently at Homestead Hill about 10 miles northeast of Fresno on July 4th 1853 where he eventually died six years later leaving his wife Maria behind with four children including future Ulysses S Grant who would later become President Ulysses S Grant Jr.. After her husband’s death she continued farming until 1865 when she sold her interest in the business once her children got older enough so they could handle things themselves without their father being involved anymore which left them free & able start over fresh with all these new resources available right here in present day Claymont CA ! Which also led them eventually becoming oneofthe pioneering American cities within our borders!
