In 1951, Interstate 5 was constructed through the Central Valley and significantly changed how people traveled throughout the valley; now instead of traveling downriver towards Stockton or Sacramento City Centre, people had to travel eastward through Martinez before reaching Clayton proper. This change led to increased traffic congestion within the community which caused some locals to begin developing their own alternative transportation methods such as carpooling or bike riding!
