Clayton, California is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 758 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north side of San Bernardino County and east of Palm Springs. Clayton's name comes from one of the few places in Kern County with an M-shaped valley named after it – Muddy Valley. The first people to live in what is now Clayton arrived by boat from Southern California around 1849. They were followed by others who came overland through thousands of miles of cow properties and Indian land before finally settling in this area about 1868. The first post office was established here in 1872. Early residents worked as miners and ranchers until the discovery of oil in 1901 led to new development hereabouts including factories that produced rubber tires and other products for automobiles and other machines. In 1945, when World War II began, some soldiers stationed at nearby Sollom Air Force Base used their airtime to help launch a farm project called "Oasis". This became known as "Oasis Farm", which still occupies much of its original acreage today (though most of it has been developed into housing). Clayton’s history goes back more than 100 years! Today’s citizens are proud to have played an important role in developing this community during those early days – they continue to contribute both physically and emotionally every day we live here. We thank our ancestors for all they did for us – they are truly missed!

In 1868, Clayton became an independent city and a county seat of Kern County. The city's population increased from 2,500 to 30,000 during the late 19th century; during World War II it grew to over 100,000. In 1959 the city was renamed after John F. Kennedy.
