In 1907, Claremont was renamed after Mount Claremont, an 8,000-foot peak in the San Bernardino Mountains. TheMount Claremont School District #2 opened in 1922 and continues to serve the community today. George Claremont was born on December 12th, 1827 in Worcester County, Massachusetts. After studying law at the University of Oxford in England, he arrived in California as a land speculator in 1851. From 1861-1875 he was president of the Western Association for Promoting Agriculture and Mines (WAPAM). In 1865 he married Lydia Maria Child who also came from Worcester County, Massachusetts. They had two children: George Atherton Claremont (1867-1948) and Lydia Maria Child Palmer (1869-1945). Claremont's early days were difficult as he battled financial struggles throughout his life. However, through hard work and determination he eventually became one of Northern California's most successful entrepreneurs. He started several businesses including a flour mill and cattle ranching operation which developed into what is now known as Rancho Cucamonga National Forest. In 1902 Claremont donated 1 million dollars to establish Mount Clareront Memorial Park within the National Park Service boundaries of Rancho Cucamonga National Forest; this donation has been used to fund many park features such as trails and visitor centers over the years. Today much of Mount Clareront remains undeveloped however it offers some great hiking opportunities with views of Los Angeles metropolitan area from many different parts of its summit!

Aftermath of the Vietnam War led to a decline in population in Claremont during the late 1970s and early 1980s; however, it has since stabilized at around 900 people.
