In the early 1940s, a group of scientists and engineers working for Westinghouse Electric Company came up with the idea of using electric current to stun people. They called their invention "tasers." The first taser was created in 1945 and it wasn't until the late 1970s that they started being used more prevalently as law enforcement officers began to use them in larger quantities. It was invented by two American scientists, Dr. Raymond Humphrey and Dr. James Fenton, who also developed other police equipment such as pepper spray and shotguns. Jedediah Smith's original rancho also included about 160 acres east of modern-day Pomona which he named Rancho Tejon after his family's patriarch Jacob Tejon who had settled thereabouts in 1781. From here several families took up farming including that of James Wadsworth whose land extended into what is today Orange County
