Claremont, California is a city located in the Inland Empire of Southern California. It was founded on November 9, 1892 by oilman George A. Huffman and his wife Anna L. Huffman as Claremont Oil Company with a population of just over 2,500 people. The company began oil production in the area in 1913 and developed an extensive infrastructure for producing oil and gas. In 1935, Claremont became part of the newly formed United States after World War II when it merged with other cities in the San Bernardino Valley to form what is now known as Riverside County. The Claremont Municipal Airport opened on December 1, 1937 and served as the primary airport for Claremont until it was replaced by Corona Airport in 1961. The airport closed permanently on January 15, 1984 due to heavy use and lack of runway space. In 1951, Claremont voters passed an ordinance establishing a city hall within the limits of the city limits which would eventually be renamed Claremont City Hall on July 1st of that year. On October 3rd of that year, Mayor Haggerty dedicated Claremont's new City Hall building at 350 S Broadway which would serve as both its civic center and municipal government headquarters until it was destroyed by fire on May 10th of 1976. On September 14th of 2007, Councilwoman Lisa Borge defeated incumbent Mayor Tom Head in a run-off election to become mayoralty for Clairmount effective October 1st 2007; however she resignedeffective immediately upon becoming mayor due to health concerns about her ability to effectively lead such a large municipality with so many cultural landmarks (including City Hall) within its boundaries.. On February 5th of 2009 Councilmember Karen Kapp won election as Mayor pro tempore; she will serve two one-year terms starting March 1st 2010 through December 31st 2011 before being elected again via indirect vote at next level elections set for April 17th 2012 through November 30th 2013 - this time serving four three-year terms consecutively beginning January 1st 2014 through December 31st 2015 inclusive...

The Claremont College campus is located in Claremont, California. It was founded in 1887 by Reverend John S. Houghton and his wife Sarah A. Houghton as a secular school for girls. The college became a religious institution in 1907 and was named after Claremont, an Australian town that Houghton had visited while he was pastor of the Presbyterian church there. The college opened its doors to students from all over the United States and around the world. In 1946, Claremont merged with Monterey Peninsula Colleges to form Monterey Peninsula University (MPU). In 1969, PU joined the Association of American Universities (AAU). In 2001, PU became an independent university again under the name of Claremont McKenna College.
