However, during World War II Claremont's economy dwindled due to military enlistments and lack of production at local munitions factories; however, it did not go out of business like some other small towns in Southern California during that time period. In recent years there has been a revival of interest in Claremont due to its unique history and potential for redevelopment into mixed-use neighborhoods with commercial corridors running through them.

The first Europeans to visit what is now Claremont were members of the Spanish expedition led by Gaspar de Portolà in 1769-1770. They named the area Santa Clara del Norte after Saint Clara of Rome who had been taken captive by the Spanish while serving as an ambassador to India. In 1821, part of Rancho San Rafael was acquired by John Sutter for $5,000 from David Tejon. Sutter founded Sutterville on his property which became known as Claremont because he wanted his new town to be similar to Monterey Bay where he had spent many years sailing vessels. One reason for wanting this type of architecture was that it would make it difficult for invaders to loot or burn down his properties without consequences since most towns in California were built using adobe construction techniques at that time. In 1855–1856 A&M (later University) students built a small school on some land east of town which they called "Ender's Grove". In 1857 George Washington Carver became Professor of Agriculture at A&M and started teaching about crop rotation and other farming methods there which helped lay the groundwork for America's agricultural sector centuries later when Carver developed varieties of corn that yielded more beans per acre than any previous variety

By World War II, Claremont had reached its peak as an international center for commerce and culture; it also became home to many prestigious universities including UCLA and USC.
