It is located in the eastern edge of the Inland Empire metropolitan area. Claremont is well known for its agricultural production and its liberal political views. The name Claremont comes from two words: "Clarence" and "Monterey". The first people to live in what is now Claremont were Jumanos who populated what were then Rancho Topanga and Rancho Palos Verdes on the east side of Los Angeles County. In 1851, Mexican land grants were made available to American citizens who would settle in Monterey County on behalf of Mexico. One group of these settlers was Captain James Irvine who founded Irvine Station just outside of Claremont on October 29th, 1852. The other group consisted of John Sutter who founded Sutter's Fort about a mile north-northeast of present day Claremont on May 10th, 1857. They named their new settlement after General José Joaquín de Herrera y Costilla y la Gaceta which they had met while exploring Monterey Peninsula together with Commodore Perry during his visit to that area in 1846-47. In 1870s many wealthy Californians began moving into central California including some within miles (to Ventura) or even kilometers (to Riverside) of San Bernardino where they set up ranching operations that continues to this day as one of the most powerful forces shapingcentral California today. It wasn't until following years when mining claims started being developed around nearby Ventura and Fillmore counties that development really picked up around hereabouts as farmers turned to agriculture for subsistence supplemented by manufacturing such as munitions during World War II; much like today with defense contractors dotted all over central CA towns like Simi Valley etc...!
