Scott Fitzgerald and Hollywood film producer Irving Thalberg. The first European settler in Claremont was José Altuve, who arrived on November 3, 1847 from Alta California. He and his family were the first Europeans to live permanently in Claremont after what is now known as Manifest Destiny led by General James K. Polk during the Mexican-American War. In 1853, Captain George Atherton and his crew of the USS Constitution landed at what is now called State Street on land claimed by both Mexico and United States under Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended that war. Atherton named it Atherton Ranch after himself and Commodore John Cushing of US Navy's 1st Fleet which had landed ashore at Calafia while chasing Mexican pirates off shore on December 15th1852 In 1865, Americans started moving into Claremont with soldiers accompanying General Ulysses S Grant's army across California during the B mobula expedition mounted by Governor Pio Ferrer to bring peace to Baja California following a 500-year conflict between Miwok Indians and Mexicans over this area known as Rancho San Luis Potosi de las Pulgas (Rancho La Purísima). Many Armenians also moved here during this time due to religious persecution back then from forces loyal to Russia in Anatolia (today's Turkey). It should be noted that there was no white minority living here until 1924 when Japanese residents were accepted into townlimits without any formal process or vote being given because they outnumbered Anglo-Americans two to one according to unofficial census figures from that year . In 1924 Japanese residents formed their own society called "The Japanese Association" which ran all aspects of townlife such as schools, shopping centers etc., but did not gain full voting rights until 1934 when they increased their membership quota from 50% percent down to 20%. This effectively left most Anglo-Americans dominant politically and economically through residential segregation until recent years when growth rates have reverted back somewhat
Claremont was founded in 1852 by the Reverend George Claremont. It became a city in 1903.
