Claremont is named after General John C. Fremont and his wife Lucy Claremont. In 1951, Congressman Jay Beattie introduced legislation to rename Claremont after his mentor and friend, Warren G. Harding. The bill passed both Houses of Congress but was vetoed by President Harry S Truman because he felt that it would cause too much social upheaval in a small town with no well-known historical figure associated with it. After many failed attempts to revive the proposal over the years, Harding finally granted clemency to Beattie's original legislation in 1982 and it was eventually reborn as Claremont's Historic Preservation Act which helped preserve much of downtown Claremont during its heyday as an entrepreneurship center before transitioning into more recent times as a sleepy agricultural town known primarily for its wine industry
