Most American civilians fled or surrendered before Lopez Moreno could reach them However 5 Californians including 3 children - Amado Sanchez Sr., Teofilo Sanchez Jr., Juanita Perez & Manuel Chavez - managed to remain hidden until morning when they walked out into open country under cover of darkness where they camped until relieved by Ulysses S Grant's army later that day . By 1880 about one-fourth (27%)of Claremont's population had arrived from other parts os California while another third (67%) had derived from immigration through Ellis Island ().In 1903–04 future Mayor Emilio Garrido organizeda black parade down University Avenue which drew some publicity but no financial support ().
