The mission was located on Rancho San Luis Obispo de las Animas (now part of Pasadena) which had been granted by Governor Fernando Ruiz to Father Junípero Serra on December 2, 1768 as part of his gift to Jesuits in memory of St. Joseph from Anahuac village near Santa Barbara.. As early as 1810 Anglo Americans began residing in Claremont when Juan Bautista Carrillo married Maria Ana Hidalgo who was also from Sayville; she brought with her three daughters--Luisa Carrillo Biguerzo (b 1812 d 1892), María Antonia Carrillo Socorro (1814-1902), and Concepción Carrillo Madero (1816-1896)--and two sons--Juan Bautista Carrillo Alvarado (1820-1900) and Pedro Antonio Carrillo Madero (1822-1893). In 1817 two brothers named Francisco Muñoz came into possession of Rancho San Luis Obispo de las Animas after their parents died without leaving individual acreage or title to anyone else: they divided up their inheritance equally between themselves and sold off some portions to other parties but retained all others including the grantee’s adobe chapel complex known today as “El Pueblo” visible from Highway 134 southbound just beyond milepost 9 along US 101 eastbound at milepost 10

Claremont is a city in southern California, located on the edge of the Salinas Valley. It was founded in 1887 by John Sutter and his brother, George C. Sutter, as a small town east of Bakersfield. The population was 23,844 at the 2010 census. The name "Claremont" comes from two words: Clarence (a toponym meaning "open country") and Monterey County (where the city is located). In 1887, Clarence was renamed after Bishop James Harkness of San Francisco who had been visiting Claremont when he got word that it had been founded. The city's first store opened in 1888 and until World War II it was the only store in town. Clarence also hosted one of Southern California's first football games in 1889 against Occidental College which ended with a victory for Claremont. A post office called Claremont was established in 1890 and remained in operation until 1907; its last letter being WOI on May 15th that year. In 1906 they built their first dam to power their municipal water system- which remain an important part of Claremont's history to this day. In 1942 Claremounts became an incorporated municipality under State law following passage of Proposition 8 - then known as California's anti-gay marriage referendum - which banned gay marriage statewide within its borders. As a result, much activity outside of downtown took place during that time period; including many high school dances which were still held at local hotels/motels near downtown instead of at what is now City Hall Square where most public events would be held today due to zoning regulations forbid buildings over 30 feet tall inside cities limits! On December 10th, 2008 Mayor Richard Riordan announced plans for new development adjacent to City Hall square totaling 2400 units, making it one of largest projects ever approved by the Board Of Directors for Downtown Clarelton! Officially groundbreaking took place on January 6th 2009 with Mayor Riordan presiding over a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by dignitaries such as Congressman Darrell Issa and state Senator Ricardo Lara among others! This project consists primarily of five hotel towers which will provide 350 jobs directly while also hosting retail stores/retail parklets along with residential units above ground level atop some beautiful old historic trees!
Claremont was founded in 1792 by Colonel John Sutter. A small community of only a hundred people, Claremont consisted of a few huts and an orchard. It was not until 1864 that the first post office opened in Claremont. The town's growth continued during the late 1800s and early 1900s thanks to its location on the Central Pacific Railroad. The population reached 3,000 by 1907, but declined to 1,500 by 1930 due to a series of natural disasters such as the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and the 1918 California earthquake. Claremont experienced its greatest growth after World War II when it became a center for defense production. In 1965, Claremont became home to UCLA's School of Letters and Science.
