Claremont is home to two universities- Claremont McKenna College and Mount St. Mary's University- as well as many smaller institutions. However, it wasn't until 1907 when Claremont received its municipal charter that it began developing into an actual town with buildings being erected on nearby hills starting with Hotel San Francisco de Asís (now called the Town Hall). One of the earliest businesses operating within town limits was The Gilded Cage which served refreshments from 1912-1920 during prohibition days. During World War II, much activity took place within and around Claremount due to its strategic location just south of Pomona between Los Angeles and Anaheim Hills making it ideal for military housing developments such as Camp Pendleton (1946) and Miramar Airbase (1948). Some notable people associated with or involved with Claremount during this time include Drayson Bogue who served as mayor from 1961-1967; Jack Kemp who represented Orange County in the U S House from 1981-1987; Donatella Arrighetti who founded L'Oreal USA Incorporated here in 1984; Clark Kerr who served as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1959-1963;and Jerry Brown who becameGovernor of California in 1975
