The town was founded in 1892 by John Claremont, who became an American millionaire through his ownership of the Claremont Hotel. Spanish missionaries arrived in 1602 and named it San Bernardino de las Nieves for Saint Bernardino of Padua. In 1821, Mexico acquired California from Spain and renamed it Rancho San Bernardino del Nevada for José Antonio Reyes y Peña de Aguirre, then governor of Alta California. As Californias population continued to grow and agricultural production improved, ranchos were established along the lower Colorado River Valley around Bakersfield and Stockton. By 1870, there were more than 40 cattle ranches operating in northern California alone. In 1892 John Claremont purchased 2/3rds interest in the San Francisco and Las Vegas Railroad Company which extended from Los Angeles eastward into central Nevada; this railroad led to development of what is now Claremont during the early 19th century as a small farming community near Reno on Carson City's edge with access only via wagon or Stagecoach days (the Transcontinental Railway reached Reno on October 15th 1870). A year later he leased 3 miles (5 km) OF THE TRANSCONOMIC ROUTE FROM LOS ANGELES TO CLAREMONT; this lease formed one block of what would become known as "The Avenue" today pulsating with activity including retail stores (Erie & Pacific), professional offices (Drury Lane law firm), schools (Old Masters School), churches (Stratford Methodist Episcopal Church), hotels (Claremont hotel) – all within minutes' walk of each other at what is now "The Avenue" cross street corner where current day US Route 80 meets I-10 exit 6A off I-10 just south of downtown Claret today! John Fenton who operated a sawmill along The Ave., started making bricks while living next door to old master teacher Mrs Gifford at 123 Elm St.. Completed brick factory opened Dec 4 1886 under name “Fenton Brick Works” . . . With increase coming daily wagons filled w/ bricks for free Downtown Los Angeles market place
