Claremont, California is a city in Southern California and the largest city in the San Fernando Valley. The population of Claremont was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. Claremont was founded by Mormons in 1847 as a small agricultural town on Rancho Palos Verdes Peninsula. In 1881, residents voted to change their name to Claremont after Senator John Fenton Clarempton who had earlier helped organize them into an incorporated municipality. From 1861 until 1923, when it became an open-air prison, Claremont was one of the most productive farming communities in Southern California. Today its economy is based on education and research with many companies located there including Pixar Animation Studios and Google Inc., among others. The history of this community can be traced back more than 160 years to Mormon immigration from Salt Lake City, Utah as well as Mexican immigrants who arrived during both times periods. The first permanent settler in what would become Claremont was George Widenbach who purchased land east of present day downtown from José Joaquin Mora y Valdés on October 10th, 1847 for $3 per acre (1/4 mile²). At that time it was still part of Mexico and there were no roads or schools outside of Mexico City so Widenbach had to build everything himself with his own two hands using adobe bricks he found along his route home from his ranching business which he operated out of a cabin nearpresent day Sunland Park Boulevard and Canoga Avenue). In 1850 Samuel Morse moved into what would become known as Morse Street where he erected a log house above what is now First Street (). He named this street after him because he had discovered telegraphy while traveling through Mexico during the Alta Californiana Expedition led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. After several changes in ownership over the next few years including changing hands multiple times between family members before finally coming under federal jurisdiction at which time First Street became Main Street (), Morse’s house remains today just south of corner intersection with Laurel Canyon Boulevard (northwest corner) Morse's neighbor also across town at 6100 North Vine St owned by Amos Eaton started building what would become known as Western Electric Company Headquarters () on December 12th, 1851 (). This company later became GEICO (). Western Electric Company Headquarters remain extant today just north of corner intersection with Hollywood Boulevard ($) Western Electric Company sold their assets to Edison Brothers Manufacturing Company () in 1893 which then merged with American Telephone & Telegraph Company () creating America Telephone & Telegraph Corporation (); AT&T remains headquartered here today One industry that never really left Claremont however was agriculture; larger farms continued to produce crops such as hay, cattle and watermelons until about 1970 When large scale production switched towards fruits and vegetables due to new technology local farmers were forced out due to decreased prices for these products relative to other goods produced elsewhere
