Citrus Heights is an unincorporated community in Riverside County, California. It is located on the east bank of the Colorado River, near its confluence with the San Bernardino River. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Citrus Heights is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first citrus trees were grown in Citrus Heights in 1892 by George Wiegand and his family. Wiegand became a successful grower and importer of fruit from Asia. In 1916, Fenton Allan built a citrus cooperative that grew oranges and other crops until it went bankrupt in 1951. In 1967, Don Kittleman bought the cooperative's share of the land that would become Citrus Heights. He began to build an orchard that would produce over 100 million oranges a year by 1998. Kittleman's orchard was one of the largest and most successful Orchard operations in history. The orchards continue to be operated by descendants of Don Kittleman today (Kittlemania Orchards). The Citrus Heights neighborhood in north-central Sacramento, California was first settled in the 1840s. The name is derived from Orchard Grove, a small citrus grove near the community's present location. The grove was part of an early citrus orchards that were sold to wealthy investors. In 1847, Cyrus Hoyt bought land in Citrus Heights and started growing oranges there. He and his wife Emma had two children: John Hoyt (1848–1928) and Ellen Hoyt (1850–1924). In 1865, Cyrus Hoyt donated land to the city of Sacramento for use as prison acres. This site became known as "Hoyt Park". The City of Sacramento built a public works project on the site in 1887 which included a new town hall and seven blocks of commercial buildings. These structures remain standing today and are used by the city as its headquarters.
