They founded an orchard that became one of the largest citrus groves in southern California. In 1926 they sold their holdings to newly formed Yucaipa County and continued growing oranges until 1957 when they merged with another orange company to form Unocal Corporation. Unocal Corp., which owned most of Orange County's oranges, went bankrupt after years of financial troubles during World War II; however, its legacy has been retained by many people including current owner New AmericaOrange Incorporated since its establishment in 1980 as a wholly owned subsidiary of PepsiCo plc.. After UnocalCorp.'s bankruptcy New AmericaOrange Incorporated took over operations but kept Unocal Corp.'s name because it felt that unifying all aspects of its business would provide a better overall product quality than doing so under different names would have done. In 2007 Unocal Corp.'s former president and CEO Ramon Sanchez announced his plans to sell all his remaining assets - including about 60% orchard acreage - back into private hands leading up to possible release from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection by late 2009 or early 2010 depending on how well he did selling some assets for cash rather than shares which would have given him total control over Citrus Heights eateries
