Citrus Heights began as an agricultural community and now has a significant financial services industry presence. The first citrus trees were grown on what is now downtown Citrus Heights in 1892 by A.J. Simons who bought land from the Peralta family for $1,000.2 In 1907, Julius Rosenwald purchased 1,200 acres (500 ha) of citrus land east of Citrus Heights from John Slingerland for $10,000 and moved his company to this site where he built a two-story wooden office building called "The Palace" which still stands today as one of the most visible landmarks in town. In 1915 Rosenwald sold his holdings to Harry Kellar and wife Alice for $27 million making him one of the richest men in America at that time. In 1916 Kellar donated another 1,200 acres (500 ha) to the City of Citrus Heights through deed presented by his friend and partner Colonel James Fenton Bailey who had also given away 100% ownership of American Telephone & Telegraph Company's San Joaquin Valley network east of Fresno to promote intercity telephone service between these large cities
In 1847, a group of American investors founded the Citrus Heights neighborhood on what is now Ventura Boulevard in downtown Los Angeles. The founders were including J.P. Morgan and Edward Hutton. The name was chosen to suggest that citrus fruit would be the mainstay of the community's economy. The first settlers were primarily French Canadian immigrants who worked as laborers on plantations in Southern California. By 1851, there were over 50 families living in Citrus Heights and it began to become an established residential area with homes, churches and businesses. In 1870, a school was built for students in Citrus Heights and by 1875, it had become a daycare center for children from rich families in Downtown Los Angeles. As the city grew wealthier, so did its need for more housing; however, manycitrus-related businesses closed during the Great Depression which affected Citrus Heights especially hard as most of their customers were now unable to afford food or shelter. Many residents decided to move away during this time period but some kept their homes while they renovated them or started new businesses elsewhere in town (such as Stonington Farms). After World War II ended troops returned home from overseas and began settling into Los Angeles proper although many citruse-owned businesses continued to operate until the late 1960s when they too went out of business due to competition from larger local companies such as Toyota Motors Limited and Seagram Distilling Company whose plants were located nearby on Exposition Boulevard across from USC campus. Today, much like before, Citrus Heights is home to a mix of single family homes with access to yards for playing children and dog walks through well-manicured gardens set against mansions that date back centuries; there are also several small shops clustered around one large shopping mall which has been expanding since it opened just south of City Hall Park in 1984
