A few weeks later, he reported seeing houses built “upon piles” near where we now stand on Main Street in downtown Citrus Heights – an indication that people were living there at the time he sighted them. Captain Cook named part of this island Point Conception because he thought it would be easy for him to determine its longitude by sighting its Cape Conception point (an extreme point along the coast). He did not find it easy to do so because currents made it difficult to measure his position from that location; instead he named it Isla de la Gracia (Island of Mercy). There may have been another island nearby too but no one knows for sure because no records exist documenting its name or location at this time - all we know for certain is that Pt Conception became Isla de la Gracia after Captain Cook's visit! Later On July 5th 1787 during Mexican War between Spain and Mexico known as The Baja California War both Englishman John Fullarton and Father Francisco Xavier Menéndez visited Mission San José de Vitria while stationed at Mission Concepción del Pueblo Viejo (Old Parish) east of modern day Citrus Heights just north of El Toro Boulevard/Highway 1 crossing San Clemente Strait off Coast Of Los Angeles Harbor before departingfor Baja California bound service on HMS Bounty under Captains Haddock & Richardson including men detailed by Commodore Perry w/intent To trade precious metals & ivory etc..
