Chula Vista, California is located in Southern California on the US-Mexico border. The city is named after Captain José Chula and his wife, Dolores Huerta. It was founded in 1867 by Spanish Americans as a small community between Bakersfield and San Bernardino. In 1932, it became part of the newly created County of Riverside. Chula Vista has since become one of the most diverse and cosmopolitan cities in Southern California, with a population of over 210,000 people. The history of Chula Vista goes back to 1867 when Captain José Chulas arrived at San Diego from New Mexico with a group of Mexican American soldiers looking for new land to settle. Heading eastward from Bakersfield on the Central Coast, they came across an area that would soon be called Chalifornia (later renamed Chavez Ravine). José soon realized that this area had potential for agriculture because of its fertile soil and rolling hills. He built a cabin in what is now downtown Chula Vista and began farming maize, beans, watermelons, oranges, wheat and other crops. In 1870 he married Dolores Huerta who also came to live in Chalifornia. In 1932 County Judge James Fenton divided Riverside into three parts: Chula Vista would fall within the new county’s eastern region; Norwalk would be split between Riverside and Fullerton; while Jurupa would be established within Los Angeles County along the Pacific coast near Guerneville.* As part of this division process, Jurupa was annexed by Chula Vista*. By 1940 there were over 200 families living in Jurupa alone†(*see below).* In 1941 Captain José Chulas died suddenly at age 70 years old†(*see below). His widow Dolores continued to run their farm until her death in 1951†(*see below). At her deathCaptain José’s son Jesús decided to continue running the farm but changed its name to “Chulas Farms” after his father’s death†(*see below). Jesús passed away in 1990 but his sister Annette still manages it today.* After captain José's passing young Jesús decided that continuing on as chulas farms wouldn't be fair so he changed it back to chulas farms upon his fathers passing Jesús' older sister took over management from him

At first it was a small village consisting only of twelve families. In 1854 Chula Vista became an independent municipality with a voting body called a Board of Supervisors. On November 3rd, 1861 Chula Vista became an incorporated town with its own government with Samuel J. Blythe as its first mayor. In 1906 Chula Vista annexed part of Rancho Cucamonga which had been purchased by banker Harry Laughlin for $1 million dollars (the largest land sale in history). The annexation created new businesses and industries including clothing manufacturing companies such as Sears Roebuck and Wickersham & Co., shipbuilding yards such as John Denny & Sons Ltd., banks such as Wells Fargo Bank, Northern Pacific Railway Company, Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, etc., along with many homes for wealthy citizens who had moved from rural areas in Southern California into towns like Los Angeles or Pasadena in order to find more opportunity for economic development. On January 5th, 1912 Mayor Blythe announced that he would not seek re-election because he felt that his replacement should be chosen through an election rather than through appointment because “my term has expired” He was succeeded by Albert Peralta who won via plurality over James Doherty (former Sheriff of Orange County)
