The name "Chula Vista" comes from the Islan Indian word meaning "place where the sun sets." In 1838 Juan Bautista de Anza led an expedition through this area during his trip to explore California's interior. On November 5, 1838 he named the cove San Miguel de los Caballeros after General Miguel Aliaga y Costilla who had fought at Alcalá against Mexican forces under Antonio López de Santa Anna two years earlier. After Mexican independence from Spain was granted on April 21,1821 by Canute III of Norway as part of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Chula Vista became part of Mexico City and was renamed Pueblo del Carmen el Real on December 6th following the American victory at Buena Ventura over Mexican troops under José Corona at that same location on October 21st; Consequently prior to Mexican independence all local names were anglicized with one exception - San Diego ('Pueblo' being retained for historical reasons). In 1861 when California became a state there were only three towns within its borders: Los Angeles (garrisoned by Ulysses S Grant), Davis (fought for by John Cranch) and Chula Vista (nearby but unoccupied until February 14th). One reason for this may have been that none of these towns could offer proper defense against possible attack from Native Americans living east or southward along today's border with Mexico – an event that would occur several times before Californios finally achieved their independent status within our state in 1850s! Sometime before 1840 Ignacio Palomares developed Rancho San Felipe about 12 miles north-northeast of today's downtown Chula Vista across Coyote Creek; land comprising much later portions including muchbuildofCity Center Drive & more recently State Route 59 between Interstate 805/State Route 101 just east & I-805 also extending into adjacent Riverside County also forming most recent maps boundaries!
