In 1908, the California Railroad Company built a line from downtown San Diego through Chula Vista to Escondido which made it possible for people living in Midwestern towns such as La Jolla or Carlsbad (now Clairefontaine) to get goods delivered directly to their homes without having to go through San Diego or San Bernardino County. This new development helped stimulate local economic activity and brought about a realignment of Mexican-American social structures within the city limits which remain today a predominant Puerto Rican/Latino cultural identity among many residents of Chula Vista proper while they also maintain some vestige of their Mexican heritage elsewhere within the city limits
