Chula Vista's history goes back to 1846 when it was founded as Rancho Buena Vista. The city became an agricultural center with citrus production and other crops until World War II when the economy shifted to Boeing Aircraft production and manufacturing. In 1990, Chula Vista adopted a new name - "Chula Vista" - in commemoration of its location on the Bay Bridge across the Pacific Ocean from downtown Los Angeles. The first European settlements in what is now Chula Vista date back to 1846 when Juan Bautista de Anza y Costilla established rancho Buena Vista near present-day Encinitas Boulevard and Harbor Drive. Mexican troops under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna destroyed Anza's outpost on 11 May 1846 after a brief siege; he retreated inland to Aliso Viejo. Rancho Buena Vista was reestablished under direction of Captain José Joaquín Cámpora about two months later at an area now known as Villa del Rey (later renamed Avalon). In 1850, JOSÉ LUIS SÁNCHEZ Y LOPEZ purchased part of Anzaldua land grant from Nicolás Urquiza for $8 per acre (about $2 per square mile). On 15 October 1850, Sanchez leased this tract from Don José Altamirano for 10 years; it remained unoccupied until 1861 when Altamirano sold his interest in it to James Hahnemann who used it for grazing sheep on his Rancho Punta Gorda property east of present-day Santana Avenue & Indian Wells Road. In 1863 Hahnemann donated all or parts of his holdings including that along Punta Gorda road to the town site named Coyote Valley because there were no suitable trees or streams within range for irrigation development there; accordingly Coyote Valley became Chulas Vistas Agricultural Union Land District No. 1 on 7 November 1863 by order of Governor Manuel Michelini following passage by state assembly Bill No: 5470–1864 entitled "An Act To Grant A Charter To The City Of Chula Vista". Theiegast lived in nearby La Mesa at 824 North Park Street from 1865 until his death in 1912 while still working for Mr Kappelhoffer & Company which manufactured soap products outfitting hotels throughout Western America such as those at Long Beach and Pasadena He also served as Mayor pro tempore during 1893-1894 inclusive vacated by WALTER MCGUIRE upon their victory over McBride’s Democrats during that year’s mayoral election held on 4 December 1893 into which had been merged both precincts then existing within District 2 comprising whole City limits then consisting onlyof portions thereof now composing entireCity Limits plus East Side lying within limits aforesaid) . . . In 1886 Donald Quimby arrived with his brother Charles Fenton aboard HMS Beagle bearing plants collected from Australia overland route during their travels through Central America Crossing Mexico waters off Baja California where they landed on 17 July 1886 They found many types of endemic wild fruits tree newly discovered here but these were not grown commercially till much later When woodchips were found growing abundantly next door Logging began soon thereafter followed by extensive building program starting with just one house going up every three months using adobe bricks making excellent drywall material which continued until 1906 when first frame & clapboard buildings got underway primarily due to high demand resultant largely from military use resulting in great expansion Of industry leading eventuallyto incorporation forming partofCityofSanDiegoCounty effective 6 October 1907) During World War I Boeing produced aircraft at nearby Renton Airport creating large amounts of noise that interfered with local residents' use of Earles Avenue between 1919 and 1923 although some residents did manage to get permits prior to that time For nearly fifty years prior thereto chulas vistas has been HQ USAF Weapons Center Southern Command flying units based out here conducting bombing raids over Japan mainlandUpper atmosphere Drop Bombing operations anytime night or day anytime during war days or nights
Chula Vista is a city in San Diego County, California. It was founded on September 12, 1887 by American Commodore John D. Roberts and his wife Emma Belle McCarty, both of Irish descent.
