In November 1850 he sold portions of his land grant to José Joaquin Murrieta and Francisco Gomez; both men then developed it into a small community known today as Chula Vista with its own school district (organized in 1857) The post office opened at Chula Vista on February 15, 1850, serving residents until May 1st 1865 when it moved to La Jolla due to population growth there following completion of ocean transportation links between San Diego andLos Angeles. At its peak during World War II (1941-1946), Chula Vista had an estimated 80% Japanese American populace because many local families had acquired homes or businesses within military bases near Ventura County Airport headquartered at El Segundo Army Air Field (). Most Japanese Americans left after 1945 however some remain until this day including Issei Katsumi Kondo who lives inside City Hall .
