Chula Vista is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 66,829 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern border of San Diego and Riverside Counties. The name "Chula Vista" means "place where the nightingales sing." The current City Council was elected in November 2004 and sworn in on December 6th. The city was founded by Juan Bando y Campos in 1875 at what is now known as Kit Carson Park after he acquired land east of Mission Trails Boulevard (now Veterans Memorial Drive). In 1905, Chula Vista became part of the newly created Riverside County when it was divided between San Diegans and Californians. In 1916, the city annexed part of unincorporated Encinitas andrews Valley which had been its rival for water rights since 1871. Chula Vista became an independent city on January 1st, 1925 following a referendum vote by its citizens over annexation into neighboring Encinitas or being given annexation by Riverside County. On October 15th 1951 voters approved annexation of unincorporated La Mesa into Chula Vista effective November 15th 1951 due to pressure from La Mesa residents that wanted to keep their own town status quo despite having nearly twice as many people living within their borders as Chula Vista did (27% vs 16%). At present there are no cities or towns within Imperial Beach boundaries that have adopted this arrangement – each municipality maintains responsibility for its own finances and services while sharing infrastructure with both cities and rural areas adjoining them

Chula Vista is a city located in the San Diego County, California area. The population was 118,723 at the 2010 census. It is part of the larger San Diego metropolitan area. Chula Vista is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America and home to a variety of cultures including Spanish, Mexican American, East Asian, Native American and Pacific Islander as well as many other languages. The city has been called "the cultural capital of America" for its many arts and culture programs. The first Europeans to visit Chula Vista were Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and Miguel Lopez de Legazpi on November 2nd 1521 when they landed on what is now known as Point Loma within present-day Chula Vista. Both men were looking for an ocean route to Asia but no vessels arrived with news of their find so they made camp nearby until morning on November 5th when they saw two ships coming in from Mexico City loaded with gold. Commodore George Vancouver sent his ship Discovery along with Lieutenant John Smith to explore this new land which he claimed for Britain under the Treaty of Paris in 1776 during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). In 1836 Chula Vista became part of Imperial Valley after Mexico ceded it back to the United States following her entry into the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). As part of that process, parts of Imperial Valley became portions of several counties in southern San Diego County: Rancho Cucamonga, Riverside County, San Marcos County/City Of La Jolla/El Centro Municipal Government areas and then again after 1929 when these areas were combined into one county - San Diego County. Today much of Imperial Valley remains unincorporated territory within San Diego County although there are pockets inside Rancho Cucamonga and Riverside Counties where people live or work outside those jurisdictions entirely. In 1853 Francisco Pacheco founded a small town called Los Alamos about 12 miles south east of Chula Vista on what is now US 101A near Twitter Creek Falls Photo: Google Maps photo) On July 29th 1853 Pacheco named his town El Nopalito after a local tree that grew plentifully around that time near Mission Peak due north (the peak today's Mount Wilson) In 1861 Alvarado opened up a store at Tenth Street & Logan Avenue which later became Alvarado's Drugstore The name "Alvarados" still applies today to this business although it has changed hands multiple times over the years since Alvarado's death in 1922 On January 8th 1865 Californio Hernandez purchased 7 acres southeast corner Fourth Street & Park Avenue from James Cameron for $2 per acre After some legal wrangling over boundaries Hernandez' settlement soon came under attack from Anglo settlers led by Colonel José Joaquín Huerta who built three churches atop hills overlooking Hernandez' community: First Armenian Catholic Church in 1867; Second Protestant Episcopal Church also known as Good Shepherd AME Church in 1870; Third Roman Catholic Cathedral also known as Our Lady OF The Rosary Chapel completed 1888 As tensions mounted between Anglo settlers and Mexicano citizens weekly violence erupted leaving dozens dead or dying plus extensive damage done to homespun stores, residences and businesses among other incidents In 1872 Captain Edward Akeley sailed pastanchored off shore during winter season while exploring Central California Coast waters looking for any Rivera galleons discovered he sighted USS Maine lying at anchor off shore covered by foggy water Blowing out lights signaling distress Hawaiian missionaries aboard HMS Bounty sighting large animal onshore mistook Spanish vessel for another galley They boarded Maine seeking help but it turned out to be just an animal
