It is the most populous city in San Diego County and the second-most populous city in California. Chula Vista's history dates back to 1869 when it was founded as a small town on Rancho Peñasquitos land by Alonzo Church and his wife Anna Maria de la Cruz. The name "Chula Vista" comes from the Yaqui word chal (chi-lah). The City of Chula Vista was established on November 5, 1945 as part of the combined municipalities of Imperial Beach and La Jolla. The first mayor of Chula Vista was Wanda Estrada Ginzburg. On December 3, 1951 Mayor Ginzburg announced that she would not seek reelection due to her husband's death two weeks prior. On February 5th, 1959 Mayor Ginzburg announced that she had been diagnosed with cancer and would not seek reelection; however she planned to continue serving until her death on March 10th 1959. On May 1st1959 Mayor Ginzburg died following an illness which caused her to develop ovarian cancer at a young age (she was only 49 years old). In 1962 Donald Trump purchased 8 acres (30,000 m2) of land near what is now known as Naval Air Station Miramar for $1 million dollars; this property became known as Trump Tower Chula Vista which opened in 1966 across from City Hall

The area that now Chula Vista was first settled by Native Americans in this location over 6,000 years ago. The name Chula Vista may come from the word "chuleta" which means "to dance." A grant of land to Francisco Bautista de Anza in 1769 designated what is now Chula Vista as part of Rancho Santa Fe. In 1846, Mexican General José Joaquín Bonilla y Costilla attacked American forces under Captain John Dickey near present-day downtown Chula Vista after being rebuffed by Ulysses S. Grant's army at Adobe Walls during the Mexican–American War. Bonilla burned down sixteen buildings in present-day downtown Chula Vista before withdrawing his force. The city was founded on May 10th 1870 when Jno Phelan donated 640 acres (240 ha) of land for a new town site within San Diego COUNTY limits; it originally included alluvial soil that had been mined near today'sPresent day Downtown Chula Vista intersection with US Highway 101E & State Route 66 NE - about 11 miles SE of downtown SD (& 9 miles NW of Carlsbad). This section includes most of what would become known as North Park & South Park Avenues today (originally just called West Side Avenue). Development proceeded slowly until 1887 when Jno Phelan donated an additional 1,640 acres (510 ha) for another town site within our boundaries - this time including much more upland soil that had been richly mineralized near Today's Present day Downtown Carlsbad intersection with I-5 southbound & SR 163 westbound (& 5 miles SW of downtown SD)), plus parts of present day East Park Drive & North Park Boulevard today (originally just called White Settlement Avenue)). A second donation in 1893 increased development even further When Jno Phelan granted 2,160 acres (960 ha) for yet another town site within our boundaries which encompassed much more wooded upland soil than had been offered earlier; this time including still more tracts along Present day Northeast Ave between I-5 southbound & SR 163 eastbound (& 3½ miles SW of downtown SD)), plus portions of present day Southwest Ave between I-5 southbound & SR 163 westbound (& 2½ miles SW of downtown SD)), as well as parts or allpresentday Northwest Ave between I-5 southbound & SR 163 westward (& 1 mile NW OF DEEP CITY), plus most or allofpresentdayNorthParkBoulevardtoday (originally just called East Side Avenue)). The townsite name finally arrived on December 12th 1898 when City Council approved its use - officially becoming "Chulasvista". As business picked up and people started moving into new homes in those early days it became evident that there wasn't enough room at either original townsite so a third Town Site donations were made on January 14th 1902 increasing development even further still: 4,320 acres (1120 ha) total! In 1912 construction began on a new hospital/mall complex which would eventually become one of America’s largest shopping malls: El Centro Mall ch/Newport Beach Blvd., Newport Beach Rd., Newport Harbor Rd., Buccaneer Dr., La Mesa Blvd., Woodbury Dr., Seal Beach Blvd.. It should be noted that these developments were not without controversy however... primarily because many fear how suburbia would impact rural areas far away from civilization! Despite this long history though, development continues apace today with nearly 60% employed Angelenos living inside cities limits while 40% remain rural residents dependent upon agriculture exports for their livelihoods!
Chula Vista is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 57,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. Chula Vista is located on an 8-mile (13 km) long peninsula that separates the Pacific Ocean from Baja California. The present-day Chula Vista Peninsula was first settled by American Indians in the late 18th century. In 1795, José Penalosa and his brother Gaspar de la Barca founded Rancho del Encinas y las Palmas de Acosta on the Peninsula. The original name of the city was "Hualpan" which means "place where there are palm trees." In 1888, Mexican president Porfirio Díaz granted Rancho Guadalupe to José Valdez for grazing purposes and renamed it Villa del Encina after his mother's family home in Mexico City. In 1912, when President William Howard Taft designated Mexican territory east of Alice Springs as Arizona Territory, he also designated this area as part of San Diego County and ordered that Villa del Encina be named Chula Vista because its location on a peninsula made it convenient for military posts and citrus production. This designation did not conform to Mexican naming conventions so governor George C. Marshall petitioned Congress to change Villa Del Encina's name to Chula Vista in order to conform with US naming conventions This effort failed but Marshall recommended that US Military appropriations fund erecting a statue of General Juan Morelos at Hotel Imperial on University Avenue commemorating Californios who had fought against Mexico during the Anglo-Mexican War (1846-1848). construction began in 1930 but only ended up costing $2 million On November 15, 1938 two bombs exploded near local businesses near what is now Interstate 5 just south of downtown Chula Vista killing six people and injuring over 60 others including many U.S Armed Forces personnel stationed nearby at Camp Pendleton Naval Base which then became known as Camp Aguinaldo After World War II ended all American troops were out OF THE COUNTRY so no one knows for sure how many casualties occurred during those years inside or outside of town limits
