Chula Vista is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 66,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Chula Vista arrived from Mexico about 1821. In 1866, Captain Fernando Márquez organized a group of Mexican American soldiers to help fight for Mexican independence from Spain. He and his men built a small fort on the east side of town and began trading goods with local Native Americans. By 1870, Chula Vista had grown into a small town with around 100 residents. In 1871, José María Aguilar founded the first post office in Chula Vista. By 1903, Chula Vista had become an incorporated city Limits as well as being home to two high schools: La Jolla High School and Stonington High School (now known as University of California- Riverside). In 1916, resident Manuel García donated land to build the Municipal Airport which would serve as an interim airport until more permanent facilities could be erected. The airport was dedicated on December 12th, 1916 by Mayor Manuel Sánchez Carrillo who also served as its first manager and president until it was destroyed during World War II by Japanese bombers over Chula Vista Naval Air Station just before Christmas day 1941 (). In 1951-1952 numerous warship bombardment exercises were conducted off the coast of Southern California during Operation "War Eagle". These events helped stimulate development along El Cajon Boulevard north of Mission Bay that continued through 1958 when construction began on Interstate 5 between Nazareth Road and City Heights Drive NW; this freeway would eventually become I-10 . However much later in 1965 when I-5 became I-8 it looped back around downtown creating an even biggerZiggy zone that still exists today
The first settlers in Chula Vista were Spanish Californios, who arrived in 1769. The area now known as Chula Vista was part of Rancho San Francisco de los Padres, which was granted to Manuel Nieto by the King of Spain in 1821. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, United States forces burned the rancho and drove the Californios out of the area. In 1863, a group of Englishmen founded a small community called "Fresno" on what is now Park Boulevard nearvisor. They were followed by other English colonists in 1865 and 1870. The city was named for José Félix Alcántara y Valdés, president of Mexico from 1871 to 1875. Alcántara had come to California with American help to overthrow Mexican rule and become an independent state. Chula Vista grew rapidly after it became a port for goods brought overland from central California via the Central Valley. Commercial fishing and agriculture became important factors in its development; oil wells began to be drilled in the late 1920s, while developing areas such as North Park and East Park led to increased housing demand starting in the early 1940s. By 1960, Chula Vista had 2generations of African Americans living here – descendants of slaves who had been transported through Southern California during World War II – making it one of the most diverse cities in southern California
